The WiMAX infrastructure is an ingenious architecture of fixed and mobile base station tower arrays woven through each other to support both 802.16d fixed or stationary WiMAX CPE, and 802.16e mobile equipment which supports fast hand off connectivity between WiMAX antenna service towers.
The Fixed tower array uses high power output transmissions to achieve broadband Internet speeds out to distances of 2 miles from the nearest fixed base station by receiving Point-to-Multipoint broadcasted signals, which are picked up by home or office WiMAX indoor and outdoor subscriber units.
The Mobile tower array is an upgraded cellular tower network that has been over hauled to handle high speed data transmissions on lower output levels to counterbalance the battery life of smaller mobile equipment form factors, and share the processing power of signal negotiations between tower and terminal devices.
Fixed and Mobile tower arrays are completely different, and for the time being should be thought of as two separate entities. Communications between 802.16d fixed and 802.16e mobile products are handled at your WiMAX ISP location via a high speed Point-to-Point tower connection known as the backhaul.
While every country that has joined in the WiMAX solution has their own locally stationed WiMAX Providers, not all WiMAX customer provided equipment functions exactly the same, and is where things start to get a little interesting.
In the United States WiMAX wireless networks operate on 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz licensed bands and on the upper 5.8GHz unlicensed band, while in other countries WiMAX communications takes place on 2.3GHz, 3.3GHz, 3.5GHz and 5GHz bands in the WiMAX Spectrum.
